Link Roundup: 5 November

Almost didn’t get this up, I’ve been distracted by a sequence of complicated political events. We won South Brisbane by the way, feeling pretty good about that one. Also I think there was another election? Maybe? Somewhere in the world? Weird to post this while they’re literally still counting the votes but we need our content.

Bit of election analysis first - Jim Malo on why it’s important that the Greens won what used to be one of the safest Labor seats in Queensland.

An open letter from 1,200 Australian academics protesting the destruction of the Djab Wurrung trees.

I won’t deluge you with US election takes but I liked this one from the Intercept about how Latino grassroots organisers in Arizona helped get votes in the state for Biden, who otherwise went solidly backwards among people of colour.

Ian Welsh on why the US election is so preposterously close. At time of writing it looks like Biden will take it by a margin of, like, one weird district in Nebraska. How did they collapse this badly against the guy who unleashed a deadly virus on America? Hint: Bernie would have won.

David Sirota with his six key points from election night. Okay, I guess I’m deluging you with election takes after all. Give me a break, it’s been a busy day of tweeting for me. Key points are the Democrats having no economic message (unlike the South Brisbane Greens!) and the never-Trump Republicans failing forever.

A briefing on the ongoing pro-democracy protests in Thailand, which I know absolutely nothing about, except that they apparently love Harry Potter. Hillary Clinton is involved in this somehow, I know it.

Jacobin interview with a feminist Polish MP about the massive protests against the government’s attempts to ban abortion. I love this! The system works!

And a point-by-point breakdown of every individual type of fried treat in the United Kingdom. The political ramifications of this are immense. I like the Orange Chips of the Black Country, I think they sound mysterious.
